Official Documents!! These will forever be a pain in the butt. For anyone who leaves their country of Birth to live somewhere else.
Because you are forever reliant on your birth country for your Birth Certificate!!
I was just reminded of this again last week when looking at what we need for our new Residency permit to live in the Caribbean.
A new apostle on my old birth certificate doesnt cut it this time. I actally have to get a new ( no older than one year) print out of my Birth Certificate AND then have it apostilized!!!
And because my children were born in South Africa to, its 3x the trouble. If you’re South African and you’re reading this, I’m sure you’re getting some flashbacks of Home Affairs offices and the quees right now.
And lets not get started on how much it costs!!!
In the last 2 years, I’ve had to get my birth certificate freshly apostled, my daughters as well. Luuckily, there is a woman in Pretoria who has actually created a business around this service of getting documents and having them apostleisd for South Africans who have left SA. So she at least saves me plane tickets to fly back to SA. Which we had to do in 2024 for new passports, because those you have to do in person. WITH BOTH parents present.

Then I now have to do mine and my kids all again now, newly issued and apostled. Plus couriered. Its not cheap, but its cheaper than flying to South Africa and doing it all myself there.
But, even with all of that said and done, I’m happiest where my husband is. And the Best part is that he is as adventurous as I am. We’re moving to our 4th country this year and we’re both not sure if this will be our final destination 🤷🏻♀️
Which is such a mind fck because I want to buy chickens and plant a garden, set down roots on the one hand, but on the other hand, there might be somewhere better for us….
